What is IEC 61000-4-13?

IEC 61000-4-13 defines test methods for evaluating immunity of equipment to harmonics, interharmonics, and mains signalling voltages superimposed on the AC power supply. These low-frequency disturbances arise from non-linear loads (variable speed drives, switching power supplies, electronic ballasts) on public power networks, as well as from powerline communication (PLC) systems that use the mains to carry data signals.

Unlike harmonic current emissions testing (IEC 61000-3-2) — which measures the harmonics a product injects into the mains — IEC 61000-4-13 tests how well equipment tolerates harmonics and interharmonics already present on the supply. This is an immunity test, not an emissions test. It is referenced by several product-family standards for equipment sensitive to power quality, including measurement equipment under IEC 61326-1 and industrial control equipment.

🔎 IEC 61000-4-13 vs IEC 61000-3-2: IEC 61000-3-2 is an emissions standard — it limits the harmonic current your product injects into the mains. IEC 61000-4-13 is an immunity standard — it tests whether your product continues to function correctly when the mains supply already contains harmonics and interharmonics. Products with switch-mode power supplies may need both: emissions testing (IEC 61000-3-2) and immunity testing (IEC 61000-4-13).
