What is IEC 61000-4-9?

IEC 61000-4-9 defines the test methods and equipment for evaluating the immunity of electrical and electronic equipment to damped oscillatory magnetic fields produced by switching operations, fault events, and lightning on power systems. These short-duration, high-amplitude magnetic field pulses can induce voltages in equipment enclosures, cables, and PCBs — causing data corruption, component damage, or system malfunction.

IEC 61000-4-9 is related to — but distinct from — the power frequency magnetic field immunity test (IEC 61000-4-8) which covers continuous 50/60 Hz magnetic fields. IEC 61000-4-9 specifically addresses the transient impulse magnetic field phenomenon. Both tests are available at Compatible Electronics' Lake Forest facility.

🔎 IEC 61000-4-9 vs IEC 61000-4-8: IEC 61000-4-8 tests continuous power-frequency (50/60 Hz) magnetic fields at 3–30 A/m. IEC 61000-4-9 tests short-duration impulse magnetic fields — high-amplitude damped oscillatory waveforms from switching or fault events — at levels up to 100 A/m (Level 3) or 300 A/m (Level 4). Many product standards reference both. See our IEC 61000-4-8 magnetic field testing page for the continuous power-frequency test.
