What is ICES-001?

ICES-001 (Interference-Causing Equipment Standard No. 1) is the Canadian standard governing radio frequency emissions from Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) radio-frequency generators. Issued by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), it applies to equipment that intentionally generates and uses RF energy for purposes such as material heating, plasma generation, welding, diathermy, UV curing, and medical treatments.

ICES-001 is the Canadian equivalent of CISPR 11 / EN 55011 and aligns with FCC Part 18 test methods. See Canada ICES Testing overview for the full Canadian ICES standard family. Our ISM Equipment Learning Center page provides comprehensive background on CISPR 11 groups and classes.

🔎 ICES-001 vs ICES-003: ICES-001 applies to ISM radio-frequency generators — equipment that intentionally generates RF energy for industrial, scientific, or medical purposes. ICES-003 applies to Information Technology Equipment (ITE) — computing and digital apparatus. If your product is a computer or digital device, you need ICES-003. If it generates RF energy for processing (welding, heating, medical), you need ICES-001.

Test Methods & Relationship to CISPR 11 / FCC Part 18

ICES-001 references measurement methods consistent with CISPR 11 and FCC OST/MP-5 (FCC Part 18). This allows products to be tested to ICES-001 alongside CISPR 11 / EN 55011 (for EU CE marking) and FCC Part 18 (for US market access) in a single test campaign — saving significant time and cost.

Emissions Tests

Radiated & Conducted Emissions

  • Radiated emissions at OATS / semi-anechoic chamber
  • Conducted emissions via LISN on AC power port
  • Group 1 and Group 2 ISM classification
  • Class A (industrial) and Class B (residential) limits
  • All three California locations for current ICES-001
